About WhatTheClip

WhatTheClip is an independent, local-first Mac clipboard utility built around bounded history, app-specific favourites, keyboard speed, and clear privacy boundaries.

The product idea

WhatTheClip is an independent clipboard manager for Mac built around a simple loop: recover something you copied recently, save repeated material into an app-specific favourite, and paste it without breaking your flow.

It is intentionally narrower than a general productivity suite. Clipboard history, App Profiles, favourite slots, and a keyboard-controlled overlay all support the same everyday task.

Why app-specific favourites matter

The useful material in Mail is different from the useful material in a code editor or design review.

WhatTheClip keeps repeated content in named App Profiles instead of forcing every reply, snippet, link, image, and file into one permanent global archive.

Local-first means explicit boundaries

The current app keeps managed clipboard payloads on the Mac and has no cloud clipboard sync, remote processing, product analytics, or remote application logging.

Local-first does not mean invisible. Titles, previews, timestamps, profile names, and slot metadata remain locally visible so the interface can help you recognise saved items. The Security page and Privacy Policy describe the boundary in detail.

Built for clarity

The product and website aim to explain:

  • What the app captures.
  • What Free and Full include.
  • Why each macOS permission is needed.
  • Which files are encrypted and which metadata remains visible.
  • When a public release is actually available.
  • Where purchase, licensing, and update services will connect later.
